Your accomodation during your Hideaway in Myvatn

Guesthouse

There are many people around Myvatn willing to share their lovely homes with visitors. Most people speak English and extend very warm welcomes. They provide simple comfort and local cuisine. This is evidently the best way to meet Icelanders, who will, as natives, be able to give you intimate local advice for your travels.

Reykjalid Hotel

Situated on the north-eastern shore of the lake, the Reykjahlíd is a cosy hotel located on the lake shore close to the village of Reykjahlid. It is a family hotel that was built in 1947 making it the region’s oldest. Most of its 9, very comfortable rooms, have magnificent views over the lake. On the top floor, a large glass panel is a wonderful place to observe some of the lake’s many bird species. An excellent restaurant serves traditional meals of fish or lamb. The hotel also organizes many excursions to it’s surrounding attractions: Askja, Dettifoss … etc.

The region has other hotels of similar quality. For the months of July and August, it is necessary to book early…

Friendly advice for your Hideaway in Myvatn:

  • Relax in geothermal baths
All travellers to Iceland would agree, Myvatn’s geothermal baths are not something to be missed! The site offers a magnificent view over the lake and waiting there for the sunset is an unforgettable experience that is, if the sun ever sets! This is the perfect place to let go of all stress.
  • Hiking around Myvatn
Lake Myvatn’s surroundings offer numerous options for beautiful walks. You’ll find well-marked trails ranging from easy walks to active climbs pretty much everywhere around the lake. Here, geologic and geothermic manifestations are everywhere: Pseudocraters, explosion craters, recent lava flows and cauldrons of boiling mud. True hiking lovers can tackle the climb to the summit of the Krafla volcano that dominates the entire region.
  • Bird watching
There are more than enough spots around the lake to spend a day observing several dozen duck species, and different kinds of terns and loons, if you don’t own a good pair of binoculars, then visit the excellent local ornithology museum.
  • Biking
The area around lake Myvatn is particularly good for biking. The terrain is smooth and it’s not terribly difficult to bike all the way around the lake in one day (about 35 km of flat terrain). Rent a bicycle on site.
  • Excursion to the Askja volcano and the deserts of Ódadahraun
The Askja caldera majestically reigns over the lunar expanse of Odadahraun, “the desert of crimes,” aptly named for its historical use as a haven for criminals escaping the law. You’ll spend a day discovering a part Iceland’s interior, with Herdubreid the “broad shouldered” mountain as a backdrop, and the Vatnajökull glacier across the southern horizon. Upon arrival at Viti lake, you’ll bathe in its hot green waters. From the end of June, in a 4WD rental car, by bus (from July 20th to August 31st), or in a super jeep with a driver.Excursion to Dettifoss and Jökulsárgljúfur National Park
Discover Jökulsárgljúfur National Park. Stop at Dettifoss falls, the powerful in Europe; walk amidst surreal basalt rock formations at Hljódaklettar, “the echo cliffs”; discover Ásbyrgi’s horseshoe shaped canyon. In a rental car or by bus (from mid June to the end of August) or in a super jeep with a driver.
  • Whale watching from Husavik
Husavik, a little fishing town on the northern coast, is about 60 km from Myvatn. Whether it be in a rental car or by bus, visit this little town that houses what, some would say, is the prettiest church in Iceland. From here set out to sea on a 3 hour whale watching tour on a converted fishing boat. Stop on your way back at the « Husavik whale center » where you’ll find an impressive exhibit on cetaceans.
  • Golfing
For golf enthusiasts, you’ll find a delightful 9 hole course overlooking Lake Myvatn in the town of Reykjahlíd. There is also an 18 hole course in the city of Akureyri as well as a 9 hole course in the town of Húsavík.
  • Plane ride over the region
To see everything in the blink of an eye, all you have to do is get a bird’s eye view! Whether it’s just over the lake and its surroundings, or out over the mountain ranges of Askja and Kverkfjöll on the edge of the Vatnajökull glacier or taking flight above Iceland’s volcanic rift is a magical experience.
