Your Trip to Jokulsarlon

An Excursion to Jokulsarlon!

At the southern tip of the Vatnajokull glacier, on the edge of the ocean, go for a lovely walk around Jokulsarlon, Iceland's biggest glacial lagoon. A haven of purity and light, its nearby natural park hides stunning polar landscapes full of fascinating contrasts!

Jokulsarlon Activities

- Halfway between the Vatnajokull glacier and Iceland's eastern fjords, most of the year the lagoon's main residents are imposing icebergs. They are magnificently painted every shade of blue white and black. A true natural marvel!

- In summer, go for a day cruise on the lagoon aboard an extraordinary amphibious vehicle. Heading in the direction of Vatnajokull this excursion will take you to the most interesting corners of the Jokulsarlon. Navigating between icebergs, with glaciers and waterfalls in the background, a few seals laze around nearby. Kids especially will love this exciting adventure, best undertaken from May to September.

- When travelling to Jokulsarlon, why not explore its ice-caves? These are one of the region's most interesting geothermic curiosities. Their translucent walls covered in blue reflections hide numerous hot water wells. The caves are at their most beautiful in winter or at the end of the day, when the horizontal light penetrates them best.

- On the other side of the road, head to Jokulsarlon's incredible black sand beach, where you'll find the glaciers beached iceblocks. Many seals inhabit the beach, but also arctic sterns and great skuas. You can walk along the eastern shore of the lagoon all the way to Vatnajokull's feet. Watch out for rockslides that can happen in the area.

Around Jokulsarlon

- There are other glaciers to the west, that of Breidarlon and of Fjallsarlon at the feet of the Fjallsjökull mountain. Smaller and off the beaten path, the setting is much more intimate. Your eyes feasting on the lagoons blue waters, you'll appreciate the site for its tranquillity.

- Jokulsarlon is a great point of departure for an exploration of Vatnajokull National Park. Covering 11% of Iceland's territory, the region is a true verdant oasis. From here you can climb to the top of Iceland's highest peak, Oreafajokull.

- Finally take the road to the waterfalls of Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss, and discover some of the most beautiful sights the southern coast has to offer.
