Arrival at Keflavik international airport where you pick up your rental car. Depending on your time of arrival, you can either start your Iceland trip driving straight to Reykjavik and settle in your accommodation or on your way there, you might also want to discover the wonders of Reykjanes peninsula. So many things to see there… impressive cliffs steaming with birdlife during the summer months, natural bubbling hot springs in Krýsuvík or the world famous Blue Lagoon. Then, enjoy the first evening of your Iceland self-drive in the world’s northernmost capital counting numerous cafes, fine restaurants and nightclubs. Staying overnight in Reykjavík.
Today is the day of your Golden Circle self-drive! Leaving the capital for the entire day, discover the many wonders of the Golden Circle at your own pace. In Thingvellir National Park and its vicinity, observe majestic landscapes sculpted by the continental rift and past volcanic activity: tectonic faults, lava fields, Skjaldbreidur volcano dome and Thingvallavatn, the largest body of fresh water in Iceland. Later on, make a stop at Geysir in order to observe the geyser Strokkur, spouting 100°c water up to 20 meters in the air every 5 to 8 minutes! Continue the road of your Iceland self-drive enjoying the thundering beauty of Gullfoss waterfall in which the glacial river Hvita falls into an impressive canyon carved in successive lava layers. Already time to head back to Reykjavík? Sure, but why not make a final stop on your way in a natural hot spring or in a Spa and experience the warmth of outdoor bathing under any weather conditions? Your Golden Circle self-drive has already come to its end. Rental car return at Keflavík International airport and departure. Depending on your time of departure, you can either drive straight to the airport or take some time to discover Reykjanes peninsula (see day 1). If you have time, allow you a last Reykjavik visit!

HOSTEL If you have a backpacker’s soul, a small budget, or are travelling to Iceland alone, this may be a good option for you.
GUESTHOUSE Whether they are someone’s actual home or an establishment more like a cosy and simple inn, Reykjavik guesthouses most often offer the best access to downtown.
STAR HOTEL Three star hotels are often in the middle of downtown areas. When they are not, they are about ten minutes away by taxi or bus. The accommodations are simple but many offer possible upgrades and triple rooms if travelling as a family.
STAR HOTEL Since extravagance and 5 star hotels are hard to come by in Iceland, these are the most deluxe options for your stay. The downtown hotels are comfortable, centrally located and reasonably spacious. They have quality restaurants and excellent efficient service. APPARTMENT If you chose to do this Iceland travel with your family or in a group of friends, you can rent apartments in Reykjavik by the day or by the week.
