Your Iceland winter self drive trip day by day itinerary

Day 1

Keflavik airport – Reykjavik – Golden Circle

250 km. 4-6hrs

Arrival at Keflavik international airport where you pick up your rental car and start your Iceland self drive by exploring the oceanic rift as you hike around the national park at Thingvellir before moving onto the geothermal area of Geysir, the grandfather of them all! Its is here where you can see the Strokkur geyser spouting water and steam around 100° C about 20 m in the air.
Next up on your Iceland travel is experiencing the power of the Gullfoss waterfall and the deep ravine it has created over many centuries before heading off to your accommodation for the night to complete your first day of your Iceland trip.

Staying overnight in the Fludir area.

Day 2

The Golden Circle - Vik

250 km approx. 4hrs

The second day of your Iceland travel takes you to experience the majesty of the infamous Eyjafjallajokull volcanic glacier (A-ja-fjart-la-yo-kilt, that´s the one) and its equally breath-taking cousin – the Katla glacial volcano. Observe the seemingly infinite waterfalls that descend from their mighty summits that contrast with the valleys and black sand beaches as you drive between the Icelandic highlands and the North Atlantic Ocean.
Visit the eye-catching Seljalandsfoss and Skogarfoss waterfalls and then go back in time at the Skogar historical museum to get an insight into Iceland´s past.

Staying overnight in the Vik region.

Day 3

The South Coast – The Reykjanes peninsula

250 km approx. 3-4 hrs

This day of Iceland travel is dedicated to exploring the Reykjanes Peninsula. Say farewell to southern Iceland as you head west to the Reykjanes Peninsula where you will discover a landscape that manifests the raw power of volcanic activity; ancient moss-covered lava fields and their irregular formations dominate this harsh and isolated geothermal peninsula which is the home to the geothermal park at Krysuvik and of course, The world famous Blue Lagoon, essential for any Iceland self drive or indeed, any Iceland trip.

Day 4

Reykjanes – Keflavik

50 to 100 km approx. 1-2hrs

Your last day in Iceland and it´s time to return your rental car at the Keflavik International airport in time for your flight home. Depending on your flight time, you can either drive directly to the airport or check out more of the Reykjanes region and there is always time for a dip in the soothing waters of the Blue Lagoon to relax before your flight.(see day 1).

Your accomodation during your Iceland winter self drive trip

Take your pick: hotels, mountain huts, campsites…

Hostel

If you have a backpacker’s soul, a small budget, or are travelling to Iceland alone, this may be a good option for you.

Guesthouse

Whether they are someone’s actual home or an establishment more like a cosy and simple inn, Reykjavik guesthouses most often offer the best access to downtown.

3 Star Hotel

Three star hotels are often in the middle of downtown areas. When they are not, they are about ten minutes away by taxi or bus. The accommodations are simple but many offer possible upgrades and triple rooms if travelling as a family.

4 Star Hotel

Since extravagance and 5 star hotels are hard to come by in Iceland, these are the most deluxe options for your stay. The downtown hotels are comfortable, centrally located and reasonably spacious. They have quality restaurants and excellent efficient service.

Appartment

If you chose to do this Iceland travel with your family or in a group of friends, you can rent apartments in Reykjavik by the day or by the week.
