Day 1

Keflavik – Reykjavik

Arrival at Keflavik international airport where you pick up your rental car. If you arrive on an early flight, you could either drive directly to Reykjavik and drop off your luggage at your accommodation or start exploring the wonders of Reykjanes peninsula. Impressive cliffs which are crowded with birdlife during the summer months, the natural bubbling hot springs at Krysuvik and the world famous Blue Lagoon are waiting for you ! Then, enjoy the first evening of your Iceland winter self drive in the world’s northernmost capital boasting numerous cafes, fine restaurants and nightclubs.

Day 2

Reykjavik – Golden Circle

Time in this Iceland travel to leave the capital behind and discover the three main attractions that make up Iceland´s Golden Circle. This is a Golden Circle tour at your own pace, so take your time to explore the Thingvellir National Park and its surrounds while you observe majestic landscapes that have been sculpted by the continental rift and past volcanic activity such as, tectonic faults, lava fields, the Skjaldbreidur volcanic dome and of course, Thingvallavatn, the largest body of fresh water in Iceland. A bit further on, stop at Geysir for a chance to see the geyser, Strokkur which spouts 100°c water up to 20 meters in the air every 5 to 8 minutes! Next up? The powerful Gullfoss waterfall where the glacial river, Hvita falls into an impressive canyon carved over centuries through successive lava layers. Already time to head to your accommodation? Sure, but why not make a final stop on your way at a natural hot spring to relax and experience the warmth of outdoor bathing. Fantastic in any weather – the ultimate Icelandic experience!

Day 3

The South Coast – The Reykjanes peninsula

On the Iceland self drive menu today? You´ll have volcanoes and glaciers, Black sand beaches, steep cliffs and numerous waterfalls. This is Iceland´s southern coastline at its stunning best! In the shadow of the Eyjafjallajokull and Myrdalsjokull glacial volcanoes you´ll pass through rich farmland plains as you enter the Katla Geopark you come across the first of the day’s waterfalls, Seljalandsfoss, 60 m high and fed by the Eyjafjallajokull glacier this lovely waterfall offers the choice to admire front on or walk behind the cascade. Skogarfoss is the next stop on this section of your Iceland travel where you will not only enjoy the site of its 60 m free fall, you will also have the chance to get up-close and personal with this thunderous fall as you stand practically where it meets the river and its waiting pool. Ascend the side of the waterfall using the wooden stairwell to the top and gaze upon the magnificent vista´s on offer or take a small hike following the river as it snakes down the mountain side and before you say good bye, visit the charming heritage museum. Next up on your Iceland trip? You are off to the Reykjanes peninsula, the home of boiling mud pools and fumaroles at Krysuvik, lava fields, raw, isolated coastlines and the silky warm blue waters of the Blue Lagoon! A must on any Iceland self drive.

Day 4

Reykjanes – Keflavik

Last day of this Iceland trip has come. Return your rental car at the Keflavik International airport in time for your flight home. Depending on your departure time, you can either drive directly to the airport or use the available time to discover more of the Reykjanes peninsula and if you haven´t already, have a relaxing soak in the inviting waters of the Blue Laggon.(see day 1).

The vast majority of Icelandic establishments are modest, but clean and comfortable. Most of the guesthouses, farmhouses and hotels offer catering. Your accommodation will fall under whichever category of establishment you choose. There is also a camping option (all camping equipment provided). Do you long to experience the deep cold? Well put on your crampons and helmet, grab your ice pick and traverse a glacier to explore an ice cave that will also be your accommodation for the night.

The exact location is confidential, but we can tell you that it is located 25 km from the Skaftafell region.

Once you have arrived at the Vatnajökull glacier, it’s time to meet your equipment! Helmets, crampons and ice picks will make sure you are properly prepared! Enter the ice cave and be amazed by the many focal points as you discover the various shades of blue created by the varied density of the ice.

After a local Icelandic diner, set out your sleeping bag and enjoy your night under the glacier. What an adventure!
