Smaller than an average horse but particularly robust and hardy, they’re the pride of Iceland. They even have an extra gait than other breeds called the tölt whose characteristic liquidity of movement makes for a very comfortable ride. Every farmer in Iceland owns one and they come in handy for sheep herding come September. Many farmers offer stays on their farms and horseback tours. This is a great way to combine a traditional Icelandic activity with your exploration of the island. Equestrian experience is recommended, however, beginners are welcome for short trips as well as on the less challenging itineraries.
