Akureyri is a lively and pleasant little regional capital, with a botanical garden, beautiful 19th and early 20th-century mansions and an excellent municipal swimming pool. You can also take advantage of this day to explore the Eyjafjörður fjord, at the head of which the town is comfortably situated, and the neighbouring Skagafjörður fjord around the beautiful Tröllaskagi peninsula. A whale-watching cruise from the port of Dalvík or a visit to the excellent herring museum at Siglufjörður could be well worth your while. Once in the Skagafjörður region, be sure to visit the Glaumbær eco-museum, a renovated 19th-century farmhouse, and take a detour to bathe in the delightful Grettislaug spring, lost at the edge of the world
Overnight in the region of Akureyri
Depart for Lake Mývatn, on the way, you stop at the beautiful Goðafoss waterfalls. Mývatn and the surrounding region boast a vast array of geological and geothermal phenomena, some of the most surprising in the country : explosive pseudo-craters and craters, recent and still-smoldering lava flows, bubbling mud pots… Strolls in an atmosphere of genesis or the end of the world, we’re not sure. Relax in the geothermal baths at Mývatn.
With a 4×4 vehicle: Take a detour via the Sprengisandur track inland to take a dip in the Laugafell hot spring or to discover the superb Aldeyjarfoss waterfall and its necklace of basalt columns.

Today you continue your discovery of the thousand and one wonders of the Mývatn region. You can also devote this day in the Mývatn region to discovering the neighboring regions of Húsavík and Dettifoss. Start off in the charming harbour of Húsavík, from where you can take a whale-watching trip. You then follow the contours of the Tjörnes peninsula, where a few puffins can be seen circling (until mid-August). You then reach the Ásbyrgi region, a surprising horseshoe-shaped canyon, before entering Jökulsárgljúfur National Park, which stretches south from Ásbyrgi to Dettifoss waterfall, the most powerful in Europe. Spectacular gorges that you can discover at several points.
Overnight in the region of the lake
Hiking, relaxing, lounging, exploring the highlands or around Lake Mývatn: there’s no shortage of choice today! For example, you can devote the day to exploring the Askja volcano region and its impressive caldera, either by bus or super jeep, or in your rental 4×4 vehicle. On the way, cross the lunar landscapes of Ódáðahraun, dominated by the impressive silhouette of Herðubreið, the “broad-shouldered” mountain.

You complete your discovery of the Mývatn region. The lake and surroundings area are home to the largest number of breeding ducks in the world, with species as specific to North America as they are to Europe. And if your binoculars aren’t powerful enough to get a good look, visit Iceland’s largest bird collection at the Sigurgeir Bird Museum. At the end of the afternoon, you then head west to Akureyri where you return your rental car at the airport and take a late afternoon flight to Reykjavík. You transfer to your accommodation in the capital.
