Travel Through the
South Coast Iceland

The Southern Peninsula, also called the Reykjanes Peninsula, is one of the most popular destinations in Iceland. This peninsula could be considered as a miniature, condensed version of Iceland with its lava fields, cliffs that abruptly emerge from the sea, its many birds and hot springs. This is the peninsula you land on when you arrive in Iceland. You will notice that the road just seems to have been dropped willy-nilly onto a jumble of rugged, volcanic, moss-covered rocks. South coast Iceland peninsula is populated by large numbers of fishermen as evidenced by the many small villages located north of the peninsula such as Keflavik, Narovik, Ytri Yumri and Hafnir.

The Perfect Region for a Short Stay

If you only have a few days to visit Iceland, then an excursion to the southern peninsula of Iceland is an excellent choice. This gives you a really great overview of the natural treasures that this island has to offer. On the Reykjanes Peninsula, South coast Iceland, you should definitely take the time to visit Lake Kleifarvatn. It is well worth the detour both for the landscapes you encounter as well as the lake and its black sand beaches, right in the middle of a desert of lava! You certainly mustn’t leave this peninsula without first going for a hot bath in the Blue Lagoon. Dive into the turquoise waters of a lake that is located right in the middle of a lava field. This lagoon is a paradise for geothermal energy. The warm and slightly salty water of this lake comes from springs located more than 1,800m underground. Here you can enjoy wet or dry saunas and a very powerful waterfall that is ideal for back massages.

Last but not least, do not leave the Reykjanes Peninsula without going for a walk around the small village of Grindavik. With its 3,000 inhabitants, this little port is full of charm and exudes a pleasant and calming atmosphere, with a view out to sea that is almost surreal.
